Vinyl liner replacement

What a liner replacement includes, and what it should.

Every job we quote has the same seven lines. This page explains each one so you can compare any quote, ours included, line by line.

01 · THE LINER

Thickness, bead and pattern, chosen with you

A replacement liner is custom cut to your pool from the measurements we take on site. The three choices that matter are below. We bring the pattern book to the measuring visit, and the quote names exactly what was chosen.

We order from major United States manufacturers and pass the written manufacturer warranty to you with the quote. We do not quote a liner we have not seen the warranty for.

Thickness20 mil is the standard. 27 or 28 mil is thicker vinyl that resists punctures and sun; we recommend it when the price gap is small, and the quote shows both if you want to compare.
BeadInground liners hang on a bead that snaps into the track under your coping. We match the bead to your track and bring a sample of the old one to the order.
PatternSolids, tile borders and full prints. Mid-tone prints hide chemistry stains and small wrinkles best; darker liners warm the water a little in spring and fall.
Steps and benchesFiberglass steps get new gaskets and faceplate strips. Vinyl-covered steps are measured and ordered as part of the liner.
02 · WHAT IS UNDER IT

Floor, cove, walls and the water underneath

The liner is the visible part. What makes it last is what we do while the pool is empty. North Louisiana sits on a high water table, and a liner that floats after a storm or a pump failure is the most common failure we see. We treat the water under the pool as part of the job.

  • Floor and coveChipped, heaved or crumbling poolcrete and vermiculite is cut back to sound base and re-troweled. The cove where wall meets floor is rebuilt so the liner cannot work under the wall. Quoted by the spot once the old liner is out, with a not-to-exceed figure up front.
  • WallsSteel walls get rust treated and sealed; holes get a riveted patch. Polymer walls are checked at every panel joint. The bead track is cleaned and straightened.
  • Dewatering wellA slotted well pipe set beside the deep end, capped flush with the deck. A pump drops in whenever the water table rises, during the job and for the life of the pool. Standard on our jobs.
  • Hydrostatic reliefA one-way valve in the main drain that lets groundwater into the pool instead of lifting the liner.
  • Main drain add-backIf your pool lost its bottom drain, this is the one time to put it back. We cut the sump, run the line to your equipment pad and pressure-test it before the floor is closed.
03 · INSTALL DAY

A warm, sunny day, start to full

Vinyl lays flat when it is warm. We schedule install day for a sunny day above the mid-sixties and keep the liner indoors until that morning. If a cold front moves the date, you hear from us the evening before, not the morning of.

  1. Hang and vacuum-setThe liner is centered, the bead hung into the track from the corners out, and shop vacuums pull it tight against the floor and walls while wrinkles are worked to the edges.
  2. Fill and cut inThe fill starts under vacuum. Nothing is cut until the water holds the liner: main drain and light first, returns as the water reaches them, the step section, then the skimmer last.
  3. New gaskets and faceplatesEvery fitting gets a new gasket and new stainless screws. Old gaskets are the reason second-year leaks happen at fittings.
  4. Start-up and walk-throughPump primed, filter running, water balanced. We go over the equipment, the warranty paperwork and what to watch for in the first week, then come back to re-snug the faceplates.
04 · QUESTIONS WE GET

Questions we get

How long does a liner last here?

About 8 to 12 years in North Louisiana. Sun and heat age the vinyl above the waterline, chemistry ages it below, and groundwater does the rest. Keeping the water balanced and the pool covered in winter buys years.

How long does the whole job take?

Two to four weeks from the quote, almost all of it waiting on the custom liner. Prep is a few working days spread across that wait. Install day is one day, the fill runs overnight, start-up the next morning.

Can I patch it instead?

A patch on a liner under ten years old is often worth it, and we will tell you so. A patch on a liner that is floating, brittle or pulling from the track is money spent on a liner that is done.

What time of year is best?

Spring and fall. Summer works but you lose swim weeks. Winter installs are possible on a warm spell but we would rather use winter for the prep and land the liner in March.

Why does my liner float?

Groundwater. After heavy rain the water table rises under the pool floor and pushes up on the liner. A dewatering well and a hydrostatic relief valve give that water somewhere else to go. We include both on our jobs.

Do I need a new main drain?

Not to swim. A main drain improves circulation and gives the pump a second path if the skimmer clogs, and with the liner out it is the cheapest it will ever be to add. We quote it as its own line so you can decide.

What does the warranty cover?

Two warranties, both in writing on the quote: the manufacturer's warranty on the vinyl and seams, and our warranty on the installation, the fittings and the floor work.

How is the quote priced?

Line by line: the liner at the thickness and pattern you chose, parts, floor work by the spot with a not-to-exceed, dewatering, drain if wanted, water and chemistry, labor. The total is on the same page. We do not price from a guess.
